Destination Tea Notes: Especially perceptive Destination Tea readers might have a theory that you can tell how much we love a tearoom by the number of pictures we take. Though this is not always the case, our recent visit to Florrie Kaye’s was such joy, we are like the proud explorers who can’t wait to show you what we discovered. Less than one hour north of New York City and just 20 minutes west of Connecticut, Florrie Kaye’s sits on a quiet main street in the Hudson Valley town of Carmel. This tearoom is one of the few afternoon tea venues where you can spontaneously pop in for an afternoon tea and/or a spot of lunch. Afternoon tea here is both authentic and creative, all made in house. After the meal, we find out why the scones here are excellent: owner Samantha Ramos’ mom is from South Africa, where she gets the curry for the tearoom’s coronation chicken salad, one of several family recipes at the tearoom, including a British scone recipe. With dozens of fragrant teas to try, you will likely decide frequent returns are a must. For the detail-oriented, this tearoom is full of special touches in the decor that will delight you, and for the very hungry, a full lunch menu of freshly made salads, sandwiches and British specialties awaits, as well as beer, wine and cocktails. Taking tea at Florrie Kaye’s easily feels like a party, so it’s worth noting there is plenty of room here for larger groups, while the servers are both patient and competent. Tea friends in the area, add this tearoom to the top of your Destination Tea bucket list.
