exterior The Carlyle in Manhattan's Upper East Side

Destination Tea Notes: An establishment of luxury living in Manhattan, The Carlyle was built in the 1930s, and has been visited by every American president since Truman, as well as British Royals and kings and queens of Denmark, Greece, Spain and Sweden. Named for British essayist Thomas Carlyle, this hotel naturally offers a daily afternoon tea with authentic clotted cream. Though, the scene in The Gallery where tea is served favors a different part of the world, inspired by the sultan’s dining room at The Topkapi Palace in Turkey (fittingly one of the top 5 tea producers, with the highest per-capita tea consumption). The low-lit room is a hub, with guests passing through to the famous Bemelmans Bar or hotel lobby, which on the upside treats you to a parade of New York characters, but may also create a bit of busyness during afternoon tea. We enjoyed the varied tea selection, large scones, and pastry assortment, only wishing that our tea strainers had been unnecessary, as we prefer a good tea to be served decanted. You know that we are at our most nit-picky when it comes to $100 teas, so you will see that our Afternoon Tea Scorecard reflects the little misses we do not expect to experience at such a vaunted New York City afternoon tea. Even so, we do not regret splurging on this taste of old New York.

Tea Selection

The tea menu thoroughly explains each of our tea choices, we especially like this to help newcomers choose their tea.

Though we love the decorative tea strainer that feels like real silver, we couldn’t pour out all our tea fast enough to prevent the last cups from oversteeping.

Scones & Spreads, Savories and Sweets

Afternoon tea is served! We should have asked for a presentation of the courses, which were dropped off with an “Enjoy!” Nitpicking as we do at $100 teas, the finger sandwich and scone plates are reversed.

Smoked salmon, chicken salad, ham and cheese and egg salad finger sandwiches make a neat grid.
scones with double cream and preserves at at The Gallery for afternoon tea in The Carlyle in Manhattan's Upper East Side, New York City
The very-done outsides of the Apple-Cinnamon and Traditional scones had us wondering how this course would go, but they split open nicely to reveal a soft, warm interior. If we are being exacting, the double cream served here alongside mixed berry preserves is a lower fat content than the traditional clotted cream, still a delicious specialty British import that goes nicely with our scone.

In the lobby, we find a mural that looks to depict English poet’s Alexander Pope’s 18th century Twickenham estate on the Thames.

  1. Thank you for rating these places. You’re as observant as I am. If you’re going to do it, do it right! I was underwhelmed by the plating/presentation. The sandwiches look boring, bread is too thick for that barely there filling. Keep the reviews coming.
