Destination Tea Notes: Last summer, Lindsay Mason of Becca’s Well in Lawrenceville, teamed with mother-daughter caterers Ginny Hall and Tammy Johnson of Nosh and Nibble to begin offering themed monthly afternoon teas. It was a joy to again experience the gourmet creations of Tammy and Ginny, formerly of Norcross’ Ivy Tea House. Their French Afternoon Tea menu delighted us with one delicious morsel after the next. Guests are seated at tables placed at the back of the shop and in a quiet event space, where our one change would have been more comfortable chairs. The Mason family also owns Liberty Books next door, whose aisles of books add charm to the teatime setting, fitting because Becca’s Well is named for the fictitious medieval community in Aiden Song, a novel written by Lindsay’s husband Zack Mason. You’ll even spot a well in the market, where we happily shopped the large selection of Rishi loose leaf teas on display. As Lindsay explained her vision to stock the market with artisan and local goods, she told us, “I wanted to create someplace that I’m happy to be.” We can attest, that’s the kind of energy that’s catching!

Pretty wicker bistro sets are tucked amongst the market displays, overlooked by a mural of a medieval village.
Tiered trays are at the ready, and just beyond, the bookstore.
The calm event space at the back of the shop accommodates larger tables.

Tea Selection
Ginny diligently serves unlimited pours of four expertly brewed teas, keeping our cups full as we try try all the varieties on offer:
The Bergamot Rose was a naturally caffeine-free rooibos blend with rose, bergamot and berries.
The Peach Blossom was a lightly flavored white tea blend with quince, peaches, orange and tangerine essential oils.
The Golden Yunnan was a malty and rich black tea with accents of plum and raisin.
And an iced option was the Tropical Crimson, an herbal blend of organic hibiscus, rosehips, licorice root, lemongrass, essential tangerine oil and pineapple flavoring
Scones & Spreads, Savories and Sweets
Doesn’t it gladden your heart to see three generations gathered for afternoon tea? Uniquely, the food is ready and waiting for each party upon arrival. Ginny promptly welcomed us and took our tea order, so we wasted no time in getting started.
We LOVE a healthy, whole food addition to an afternoon tea menu, this one a French favorite: Nicoise Salad with red potato, tomato, olives, asparagus, egg and Dijon mustard vinaigrette. Delicious!
The two scrumptious savories were offered in double portions: A Steak au Poivre Tea Sandwich with Roasted Red Pepper Aioli, on a soft ciabatta, and Pink Peppercorn Salmon bites with Shaved Fennel, Fresh Dill and Tzatziki.
We also appreciate when tea is used as an ingredient, as in these Bergamot Vanilla Scones, served with a whipped cream and a first for us: Chocolate Whipped Honey (pictured below).
Each place setting has a Blancmange (fittingly, a popular French milk pudding from medieval times), similar to but not exactly a panna cotta, topped with Blackberry Coulis and fresh mint.
The Cherry Almond Frangipane is scrumptiously moist, again served in double portions.
The dessert course finishes with each guest receiving a slice of Chocolate Marquise Cake with Whipped Cream, Raspberry Dust and fresh fruit.

Becca’s Well, from the story written by owner Zack MasonTeapot and teacup earrings – yes!
I also attended a tea at Becca’s Well. The tea as well as the food that was served was excellent and plentiful. I wouldn’t recommend the tea, however, for folks attending by themselves like I did. This was definitely suited for couples and groups.
If you’re looking for an outing with a friend or a loved one, I’d check this event out.
We love comments! Destination Tea's comment policy shares a guiding principle with afternoon tea etiquette: please be gracious. We welcome honest comments that are not rude or scathing.
