Destination Tea Notes: Fans of The Ginger Room in Alpharetta, who already know how delicious this afternoon tea is from start to finish, will delight at the opening this year of their second location on Holcomb Bridge Road: Ginger Yums Sip Shop. Owners Angela Avery and Dr. Karl Walbrook needed to expand to meet the high demand for their afternoon tea reservations, which often book solid more than a month in advance at The Ginger Room. Walking into this unassuming strip plaza storefront, you will be happily surprised to find the inviting tearoom in back, which Angela designed herself. We appreciate the traditional furnishings she uses to give the space some gravitas, brightened by the trendy flair of bold floral wallpaper murals. Guests can expect the same quality afternoon tea service here as at the original location, including perfectly soft and tasty finger sandwiches, British expat Karl’s homemade scones, clotted cream and award-winning Bakewell tart, properly steeped teas, and of course, the pageantry that Angela and Karl bring to teatime. On our visit, Karl asked for our attention for the crowning of three “queens” who were celebrating special occasions, and then we all joined in singing happy birthday to the 80-year-old birthday girl. We left feeling grateful that this business continues to expand, giving more Atlantans the opportunity to experience a proper afternoon tea.
