Destination Tea Notes: We suspect the staff at Dahlia’s might be new to the afternoon tea tradition, which they began offering last summer. However, you may happily overlook the details we’ll mention below, given the modest price-point, which could make it affordable to host a large group for afternoon tea here. Probably the greatest drawback for us was how much of the menu had been commercially sourced, because as you know, we love an afternoon tea menu that is made from scratch. Everyone did find items they enjoyed, and we all happily sipped on bottomless pots of the renowned DAMMANN Frères teas. One of the highlights of this experience was our server Lauren, who was great about checking in with us to see if we needed anything, while allowing us plenty of uninterrupted time to chat. Because after all, the conversation is the thing.
It would be fun to enjoy an afternoon tea on this spacious patio with stylish wicker armchairs.
Walk through the lobby and down this hallway on the right to reach Dahlia’s.
We appreciate that afternoon tea was set in the back room (at left) for privacy, and because it is a bit more decorative.
This medium-sized party room could comfortably seat about two dozen guests. Appreciating the white tablecloth and DAMMANN Frères china.
Tea Selection
We sipped on a glass of bubbly while pouring over the tea box to make our individual selections, and like the thoughtfulness of having sparkling cider as an option. Because of the size teapots used at this afternoon tea, guests need to be advised to use two tea sachets for steeping to avoid a weak brew. We appreciate the citrus offering, though at an afternoon tea, thin lemon slices would be served rather than wedges.
Loving the saucer pattern, and the fact that Lauren offers to bring us more hot water as desired.
Scones & Spreads, Sweets and Savories
Tiered trays were set out on our table upon our arrival (customarily food is served after tea is poured). Our trained teen reviewers noted that the scone and dessert courses were plated in reverse order. Well done, up-and-coming afternoon tea aficionados!
Each guest was offered three “sandwich soldiers”: egg salad, chicken salad and smoked salmon finger sandwiches served on cocktail breads, crusts on. While we would have liked a neater presentation, the fillings were very tasty, especially the smoked salmon, although it lacked a spread, perhaps a dill cream cheese. And such a generous portion of salmon was piled between the two slices, that some found it difficult to bite through.
The blueberry scones, one per guest, which are outsourced, each had varying crumbs, some splitting easily, while others seemed congealed and undercooked. These were served with three preserves and lemon curd.
Dessert included a plethora of commercially made macarons and lemon petits fours.
