Barbie Tea Party by Bluebird Tablescapes

The invitation said, “Dress up and bring your bling” for “a Bluebird event like you have never experienced.” Having recently seen the “Barbie” movie, we were ready for this “Spectacular Barbie Tea Party for Adults,” hosted by Jakkie Naude of Atlanta tea party caterer Bluebird Tablescapes.

Once you see these pictures, you will not believe that this event was $25 per person. We applaud Jakkie for all the care, creativity and hours in the kitchen she puts into her events. It seemed the food and beverage courses were never-ending, which Jakkie set up buffet style to allow her to amiably pour tea while chatting with her guests.

As at any joyful afternoon tea, the guests created a scene of laughter and storytelling. One of our tablemates taught us how Persians pop a sugar cube in the mouth and sip tea over it rather than add the sugar to their teacup. We met certified tea consultant and writer Lady Dana Austin and heard about her upcoming books and international tea travels.

Pink Rosewaters were delicious! On the left you’ll see Barbie’s Favorite Pink Drink, inspired by Starbucks’ Pink Drink, made with green tea. A third beverage was offered before tea was poured: Strawberry Daiquiri Sips set out on a sideboard.

South-African born Jakkie says, “I want things to be beautiful and delicious.” And so they were!

Jakkie’s teapots are musical! That’s a first for us, listening to a fine china teapot play classical tunes while pouring out cherry blossom green tea and butterfly pea flower tea.

For those who say, “life is short, eat dessert first,” you’ll be happy to see that the first course of many was set at our places upon arrival: Raspberry Mousse Cups.

We told Jakkie, we appreciated the fruits with a touch of meat or cheese to offer a lighter option, and Doug and Angela agreed one of our favorite items was the simple Salami Rose. There was plenty of everything for all the guests, who revisited the buffet as they liked.

Look carefully to see the details in Jakkie’s presentation style. She has layered different melons and made a tiny rose garnish out of the prosciutto.

These are perfectly reminiscent of an American childhood – taking a kids’ favorite (Rice Krispie treat) and decorating it to look like an ’80s Lisa Frank sticker.

Just in case you forgot your tea hat…Jakkie also set up a balloon arch for a photo station.

The best photo we snapped. Our tea party must have looked like a dream to these kids.
