Harney & Sons Millerton tea bar

Destination Tea Notes: Anyone who ventures into the American afternoon tea scene will soon know the name Harney & Sons. A family business that began in 1983 in the basement of John Harney’s Connecticut inn, where he began blending teas for his guests, Harney & Sons today offers more than 300 teas, of which fan favorites such as Paris, Wedding and Hot Cinnamon are frequently featured on afternoon tea menus throughout the country. Three generations of the Harney family work together to run their online business, bottling plant, and tea shops in Millerton and Manhattan, New York. After years of enjoying their tea blends, we had the opportunity to visit Harney & Sons’ Millerton tea bar, to see how they serve up a cream tea and proper cup of tea. At the counter, as we contemplated how impossible it is to just choose one or two teas from this vast menu, we were astounded by tea barista Taylor’s mastery. She is ready to describe the flavor profile of every tea on offer, and uses Zojirushi water boilers to select the proper temperature for each tea’s preparation. The food here is scratchmade and yummy, from lunch items to baked goods, perfect for what we like to call a “DIY afternoon tea.” However, we focused on our mission: to sample the cream tea, which was delightful. A surprise bonus of the trip was the chance to browse the large gift shop here, which featured several tea gifts we hadn’t seen before. If we were in the area, we’d certainly be returning regularly to make our way through this gargantuan collection of teas — no better way to expand your tea palate!

cream tea at Harney & Sons Millerton, New York tea bar
Technically, a cream tea is comprised of tea, scones, clotted cream and jam. We couldn’t help but to also sample this soft and heavenly blueberry cake. The generously sized drop scones are fluffy with a crust lightly sprinkled with sugar, and served with real clotted cream and preserves. Excellent.

These blends are particularly well suited to cold brews, and a clever concept in a country where the number one tea consumed is iced tea.
