Destination Tea Notes: In the United States, there are only a handful of hotels that offer a daily complimentary afternoon tea to overnight guests, which is why we were delighted to stay at Savannah’s Bellwether House, a member of Historic Hotels of America. Every day, a different assortment of savory and sweet bites is served with hot or iced teas, to guests who have just strolled in during the four o’clock hour. The menu is about half the size of a full afternoon tea, which is wise considering how close teatime is to dinnertime. Four is a very historically accurate hour for afternoon tea, suited to this Victorian era setting, but a bit earlier start time would allow guests to stay hungry for exploring Savannah’s dinner scene. We love the thought that was put into developing this tea service: loose leaf teas from a local tea company, infusers with matching plates to hold them for a second steep, tea sandwiches shaped like the Bellwether sheep logo, freshly made treats. Each day’s menu is a surprise, which the friendly staff competently assembles while dipping behind the bar to fill tea orders. We loved our stay here, which also included a full breakfast, free parking, stately room with a comfy bed, and nightly sabering with complimentary glass of champagne.

Each room is unique in this hotel. We had to go up the outdoor back staircase to reach ours. Below is a glimpse of the brick back patio, where firepits and adirondack lounge chairs make for the perfect place to read while enjoying a cup of tea.

A QR code at the table takes you to the tea offerings. We would love to see flavor descriptions included to help us choose. These are available hot or iced.

When we inquired about the tea choices, the staff kindly invited us to explore the various tea canisters, so we could see what each blend contained.

One of us had an iced Bellwether, a green tea blend, with honey – refreshing!

The yummy Paris Black was essentially an Earl Grey with tangerine oil added. We loved this large infuser that could be lifted out and neatly sat on its accompanying dish.
